Important Update: Aboriginal Languages Program

Last week, we sent out an announcement stating that the Aboriginal Languages Initiative (ALI) Program would be administered by the Department of Canadian Heritage (DCH) starting in fiscal 2010/11. This was because of a change in criteria that disallowed the First Peoples’ Heritage, Language and Culture Council from being a regional delivery agent for B.C.

Since we sent out this announcement, we have been in discussions with the Department of Canadian Heritage about how to bring delivery of federal First Nations language program funding back to B.C.

On this front, we have great news! The First Peoples’ Cultural Foundation, has been deemed eligible to receive and distribute funding for communities as a registered charity. The First Peoples’ Heritage, Language and Culture Council will assist the Foundation to administer the funding for First Nations language revitalization projects in B.C.

Although the delivery agent will change, the process will be very much the same. However, please note that you will now need to visit the Foundation’s website (www.fpcf.ca) to download application and reporting forms. These forms will be available in March 2010.

*** New deadline for applications: The deadline to apply for next year’s ALI funding has been extended – at this time, it is expected to be in April 2010. Please watch the Foundation website for updates. We will also continue to send out updates via fax, email, Facebook and Twitter.

In the meantime, if you have any questions contact the Language Program staff. Please email your inquiries to:

Our two organizations look forward to working with community partners to revitalize B.C. languages. Our languages are valuable and important to all of us.
