The First
Peoples’ Cultural Foundation (FPCF) is an Aboriginal
directed, non-political, non-profit society devoted to languages,
arts and cultures.
The FPCF’s structure and history have shaped strong
connections with grass roots language, arts and culture initiatives.
We are being recognized Canada-wide by both Aboriginal and
non-Aboriginal communities for being, as described by Minister
Sheila Copps, an ‘avante garde model organization’.
One of the FPCF’s major projects is the on-line language
archives known as FirstVoices.com. FirstVoices acts not only
a record of many First Nations languages from Canada, it
also includes games for children, teacher resources, stories,
songs and multi-media files which collectively act as a powerful
language learning tool. An important aspect of the archives
is that they are built and maintained within the community.
Youth and Elders working together to keep their language
and culture alive and accessible for future generations are
the driving force behind FirstVoices.com.
The FPCF office is currently located on the Tsartlip reserve in Brentwood Bay, sharing the same building as the band office.
Community members are welcome to take advantage of the resources
available at the FPCF office, including a reference library
with books, magazines, newsletters and notices for up-and-coming
cultural events, all relevant to First Nations people. Our
computer lab is set up with high-speed internet on iMac computers
where adults and children can learn about FirstVoices.com,
type, surf the internet or play games. Our helpful staff
are always on hand to assist with any technical issues. Please
stop by the office anytime and get aquatinted with the FPCF,
or book an appointment for an informational presentation.
